How to Protect Yourself from Crypto Scams

IFCCI Editorial · Communications25 July 2025

As Crypto Popularity Grows, So Do the Scams

With the rise of cryptocurrencies worldwide, scammers have become more creative than ever — targeting not only beginners but even experienced traders and investors.

Don’t assume you’re immune just because you’ve been in crypto for a while. Scam tactics are constantly evolving, and staying updated on the latest threats isn’t always easy.

That said, you can protect yourself. Here are 8 smart tips to help you avoid falling victim to cryptocurrency scams:

8 Tips to Protect Yourself from Crypto Scams

1. Never share your wallet’s seed phrase.

If someone asks for your seed phrase — whether for an “investment opportunity,” wallet recovery, or account “loading” — it’s a scam. Period.

Your seed phrase = full access to your wallet. Keep it private, even from people you trust. Yes, even if your mom asks.

Store it securely and offline.

2. Always do your own research (DYOR).

Before investing in any cryptocurrency or project, take the time to understand what it is and who’s behind it.

Search the name of the project along with words like “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” But don’t stop at the headlines — read carefully. Scammers often plant fake positive reviews.

Trust your own research — not hype from strangers.

3. Be wary of urgent requests.

Scammers love to pressure you into acting fast. Maybe they promise a bonus or a huge discount — but only if you invest right now.

Or they pretend to be a friend in a crisis, urgently needing crypto.

Any time someone’s trying to rush your decision, that’s a red flag. Slow down, think it through, and if in doubt — ignore the message.

4. Don’t trust social media hype.

Social media is one of the top ways scammers reach people.

They promote fake projects on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Discord, and Telegram — sometimes using fake endorsements from celebrities or influencers. You may even see doctored screenshots and photos to make the scam look real.

When you see overhyped crypto promotions online, be skeptical. Research the project yourself before making any decisions.

And if a stranger wants to start a quick relationship or romance with you, especially through social media — be aware. It could be the start of a romance scam.

5. Ignore random DMs.

Getting a message from a stranger about a hot new crypto investment? Ignore it.

Even if it’s someone you know, be cautious. Their account could be hacked, or they may have unknowingly fallen for a scam themselves.

Never send crypto or share personal details with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

6. Double-check website addresses (URLs).

When visiting any crypto-related website, always verify the URL. Scammers often create fake sites that look identical to the real thing — except for a tiny spelling difference.

To be safe, get official links directly from the project’s verified social media accounts or from trusted sources like CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko.

Also, check that the website uses “https” — not just “http.” And avoid clicking on links in emails, texts, or DMs unless you’re sure they’re legit.

7. Only download apps from official app stores.

When using crypto apps, only download from trusted platforms — the Apple App Store for iOS, and Google Play Store for Android.

Avoid “sideloading” apps from unknown sources — those apps haven’t been reviewed or approved by Apple or Google and may be malicious.

Fake wallet apps are a common scam. Once you deposit your crypto, it’s immediately transferred to the scammer’s wallet — and it’s gone.

Don’t fall for links asking you to install apps to “fix” a problem or give someone access to your device.

8. Be cautious of anything with “promises” or “guarantees.”

If someone claims they can guarantee high returns with no risk — it’s a scam. No exceptions.

You may hear glowing testimonials or see screenshots of big profits. Don’t trust them — these are often fake, created to lure you in.

If it sounds too good to be true, it is. No one — not even the most skilled trader — can guarantee profits.

Stay Smart. Stay Safe.

Crypto offers exciting opportunities, but it also comes with real risks. Use common sense, stay skeptical, and always protect your private information.
