📰 YTL Communications’ Yes Launches Malaysia’s Maiden 5G Advanced Network

KUALA LUMPURYTL Communications Sdn Bhd, the operator of the Yes 5G brand, has officially launched Malaysia’s first 5G Advanced (5.5G) network, marking a pivotal milestone in the nation’s digital transformation journey under the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL).

The move positions YTL Communications as the first telco in the country to deliver ultra-high-speed, low-latency connectivity with enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) integration and improved energy efficiency across its network.

Accelerating Malaysia’s Transition into the 5G Advanced Era

The 5G Advanced technology, often referred to as “5.5G”, promises to deliver 10 times higher data throughput and lower latency than existing 5G standards. This will enable seamless experiences in smart manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, immersive metaverse platforms, and next-generation IoT ecosystems.

“The launch of Malaysia’s maiden 5G Advanced network demonstrates our commitment to driving innovation and supporting national goals under the Madani Economy framework,” said Wing K. Lee, CEO of YTL Communications.
“We are not just providing faster internet — we are laying the foundation for a fully digital and intelligent Malaysia.”

YTL Communications confirmed that the rollout will begin in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, and Johor Bahru, with plans to expand to other major cities by mid-2026.

Strategic Collaboration and Infrastructure Integration

The deployment leverages YTL’s strategic collaboration with Ericsson, utilizing the Swedish telecom giant’s 5G Advanced-ready equipment and software innovations. This partnership aligns with Malaysia’s National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative and the government’s goal to achieve comprehensive 5G coverage nationwide by 2025.

“YTL’s early adoption of 5G Advanced shows strong private-sector confidence in Malaysia’s digital ecosystem,” noted Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Deputy Minister of Communications.
“Such partnerships strengthen Malaysia’s positioning as a regional hub for innovation, smart industries, and AI-driven digital infrastructure.”

The 5G Advanced system integrates AI-enabled network orchestration, real-time energy optimization, and massive machine-type communications (mMTC) to support emerging industries, including smart cities, financial technology, and digital education.

Driving Economic Competitiveness and Digital Inclusion

Economists and industry observers suggest that YTL’s initiative could significantly enhance Malaysia’s digital competitiveness within ASEAN.
According to IFCCI’s Digital Infrastructure Research Division, the 5G Advanced rollout could contribute up to RM18 billion to the Malaysian economy over the next five years through productivity gains, digital entrepreneurship, and innovation-led employment.

“This development is more than a technological upgrade — it’s an economic catalyst,” said Xavier Lee, Chief Marketing Officer of the International Financial Consultant Certified Institute (IFCCI).
“The convergence of 5G Advanced and AI will redefine financial services delivery, cybersecurity frameworks, and even sustainable ESG data management.”

YTL Communications has also pledged to work with local universities and startups under its Yes 5G Innovation Lab, supporting research in AI applications, fintech connectivity, and green technology.

Regulatory Alignment and Consumer Readiness

The rollout is being closely coordinated with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to ensure compliance, interoperability, and fair access across the industry.

Consumers can expect enhanced 5G device compatibility and introductory data plans as part of Yes’s promotional rollout, with a focus on affordable, inclusive digital access for both urban and rural users.

“5G Advanced will redefine the way Malaysians work, study, and transact,” said Dr. Asha Menon, a senior digital policy analyst at IFCCI.
“Its success depends not only on network speed, but also on the country’s ability to integrate digital literacy, cybersecurity, and affordability into one cohesive framework.”

Outlook: Malaysia’s Leap Toward 6G Readiness

With YTL’s pioneering launch, Malaysia positions itself among early adopters in Asia transitioning toward 6G-readiness.
Experts project that 5G Advanced technologies will serve as the stepping stone toward next-generation wireless infrastructure, expected to emerge globally by 2030.

The government’s continued support for AI integration, data governance frameworks, and cross-sector partnerships is likely to accelerate digital adoption, further solidifying Malaysia’s role as a regional technology leader in the decade ahead.
