The Malaysian ringgit ended higher against the US dollar on Monday, supported by improved investor sentiment ahead of Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) overnight policy rate (OPR) decision scheduled for release tomorrow.
At the close, the local currency appreciated as traders adjusted positions in anticipation of BNM’s final Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year. Market analysts attributed the ringgit’s upward momentum to a softer US dollar, easing Treasury yields, and expectations that the central bank will maintain its policy stance to balance inflation control and economic growth.
“The market is cautiously optimistic that BNM will hold the OPR steady at 2.75%, given the moderate inflation trend and steady domestic demand,” said a currency strategist from a Kuala Lumpur-based investment bank.
The ringgit also traded higher against a basket of major currencies, reflecting regional strength amid improving risk appetite. Meanwhile, broader market activity remained measured as investors awaited further cues from the upcoming policy statement and US economic data later this week.
Economists noted that any signals of future tightening or dovish adjustments in the OPR could influence short-term currency movements. “BNM’s communication tomorrow will be closely watched for policy direction into early 2026,” one analyst added.
The local unit’s gains come despite global market uncertainties, including fluctuating commodity prices and mixed signals from US economic indicators.
IFCCI Editorial Analysis:
The ringgit’s firm performance underscores investor confidence in Malaysia’s monetary stability and the market’s disciplined response ahead of key policy decisions. The OPR announcement will remain the main catalyst for short-term currency direction, with potential spillover effects on capital flows and domestic bond markets.
