NPE to Get 15km Extension, Toll Rates to Be Revised

The New Pantai Expressway (NPE) is set for a major upgrade, with plans for a 15-kilometre extension aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity across the Klang Valley. The project, announced by Malaysia’s highway authorities in collaboration with the concessionaire, is expected to significantly enhance traffic flow between key urban corridors, especially during peak hours.

Extension Details

The 15km extension will link Subang Jaya, Seri Kembangan, and the southern Klang Valley corridor, providing motorists with an alternative route to bypass high-traffic areas. According to project insiders, the extension is expected to be constructed in phases, with preliminary works commencing in early 2026 and full completion targeted by 2030.

Toll Rate Adjustments

In line with the extension, toll rates along the NPE will be revised. While details on the new pricing mechanism are yet to be finalized, the Ministry of Works confirmed that the new rates will follow a tiered structure. Officials emphasized that the revision seeks to strike a balance between maintaining affordability for road users and ensuring financial sustainability for long-term highway maintenance.

Industry analysts suggest that commuters can expect an average increase of 10% to 15%, depending on vehicle class. However, discounted rates may be offered during off-peak hours to encourage better traffic distribution.

Economic & Social Impact

The NPE extension is forecasted to bring positive spillover effects to property values in areas along the route, particularly Bandar Sunway, Puchong, and Seri Kembangan. Real estate consultants note that improved accessibility often boosts demand in both residential and commercial sectors.

Moreover, the expansion aligns with Malaysia’s broader infrastructure agenda under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), which emphasizes sustainable mobility, reduced congestion, and improved public transport integration.

Balancing Public Sentiment

While the extension is welcomed by many commuters, public feedback has raised concerns regarding toll hikes and the overall cost of living. The government has assured that stakeholder engagement sessions will be held prior to finalizing toll adjustments, ensuring transparency and public input in the decision-making process.

Looking Ahead

Transportation experts believe that expanding the NPE could serve as a strategic backbone for Klang Valley’s urban mobility, especially with the integration of MRT and LRT feeder routes. As Malaysia continues to modernize its infrastructure, projects such as the NPE extension highlight the delicate balance between development, affordability, and sustainability.
