Why Breakouts Are So Popular

Breakouts are a favorite strategy among forex traders—and it’s easy to see why.

When price finally punches through a key support or resistance level, it seems logical to expect it to keep moving in that direction. After all, it must’ve taken a decent amount of momentum to break through, right?

So you hop on the trend train. It feels like smooth sailing from here…

Just wait for it…

The price inches forward… looks promising…
Then—BOOM! It suddenly whips back in the opposite direction.

Welcome to the World of Fakeouts

You thought you had the golden setup. The “bread and butter” trade.
Next thing you know, you’re left holding nothing but hope—and maybe a few ketchup packets, like Tom Hanks in The Terminal.

Support and Resistance Aren’t Perfect Lines

One key thing to understand is that support and resistance are not precise price points—they’re zones where price tends to react.

Support Levels

  • These are areas where buying pressure often beats out selling pressure, halting or reversing a downtrend.

  • Strong support levels can hold even when temporarily broken, offering potential buying opportunities.

Resistance Levels

  • These act like ceilings where selling pressure outweighs buying pressure, stopping or reversing uptrends.

  • Even if price pokes above, strong resistance levels can still hold, offering good shorting opportunities.

So when price breaks through one of these zones, it doesn’t always mean it’s time to jump in.

Prepare for Fakeouts

Not all breakouts are real—and that’s where many traders get burned.
